Joshua Sanford

Joshua is a member of Northgate Baptist Church and is nominated by Northgate Baptist Church.

I would be a good fit because I am a passionate, gifted and experienced leader who will help bring clarity, wisdom and an appropriately agitative voice to the table.

Josh’s gifts and abilities are leadership, apostolic, communication, finance & property, pastoral care and community engagement. As well as being passionate & energetic.

Josh studied for his Bachelor of Applied Theology at Carey from 2008 onwards and has a wealth of experience in many areas such as:  24-7 Youth Worker from 2008 – 2018; Youth Pastor at Whangaparāoa Baptist from 2008-2018; Team Leader/Lead Pastor at Whangaparāoa Baptist Church 2018-2022; Director of Coast Youth Community Trust from 2017-2022; and Chair of Northern Easter Camp Board from 2019 – current.

Josh is someone who loves to re-think how we can be and do church – in ways that engage the next generation, and our wider communities. He brings a heart that is prepared to ask questions and would help us think as a movement about our future – whilst also being an activator that pushes these conversations to action. Alongside this, his experience with WBC has involved property development and commercial property management so he would bring some understanding in this space. Finance is also an area of passion and understanding. Most of all he brings a heart and love for Jesus – keeping focused on the ‘why’.

Josh has a good track-record in leadership. High character. Loves Jesus. Theologically trained. Proven leadership experience in governance settings. He has considerable experience as a pastor in a Baptist church, and also in various roles outside the church and in the workplace. As a younger leader, he brings a particular view on leadership, Church & Mission. Josh is forward looking and not afraid to embrace change.

Josh has been actively involved at Northgate since leaving Whangaparaoa Baptist Church and asked for his membership to be transferred last year. He is well known and highly regarded at Northgate. At a recent Northgate Elders’ meeting, his nomination for Assembly Council was enthusiastically endorsed.

Get to know Josh:

I have had the pleasure of serving as a Pastor at Whangaparaoa Baptist for 14 years, both as Youth Pastor & Team Leader. Alongside that, I was the Director of one of our community Trusts – CYC Trust, which working with vulnerable young people and families within the Whangaparaoa Community. This included holding, and tendering for, government contracts, managing a team of youth workers, social workers and administrators, as well as many other facets including general finance, grant funding and contract funding.

I have been on numerous boards within the Church and wider social service space including Chair of Northern Baptist Easter Camp for 5years, Trustee of Future Whangaparaoa Trust Board and current board member of Whangaparaoa College.

Since finishing in my pastoral role at Whangaparaoa Baptist at the end of 2022, I have co-founded ‘Kanuka Living’, an organization with purpose of creating achievable pathways to home-ownership for the working disadvantaged. As well as being part of the Common Good Coffee team, looking after the Northern region.

I am a leader, with experience in both governance and management spaces, who is passionate about re-imagining how we continue to be the Church that Christ is building. I’m an action oriented person (high activator), with good communication and feel called to be creative and agitative in how we look forward.

I have been part of Assembly Council for 3 years now (1year co-opted + a 2 year appointed term), and sense God is doing some special things that I feel drawn to be part of contributing to. I have a strength of bringing clarity through communication and action in spaces of leadership.
